Software Directory Layout

PortfolioXpert stores files on your local computer drive in two different, top-level folders:

Program Data (PortfolioXpert)

The Program Data Folder is used to store the PXPortfolioXpert executable and Java Runtime files. Under default installation settings for Windows, the folder is located at <HOME>\AppData\Local\PortfolioXpert. For example, when using Windows 7 and the username 'michael', the folder is located at C:\Users\michael\AppData\Local\PortfolioXpert. This folder can be removed/deleted at any time and most of the files are removed during the Uninstall process, but once removed PXPortfolioXpert will need to be re-installed.

Configuration Data (pxworkspace)

The Configuration Data folder is where your personal settings are saved. Under default installation settings for Windows, the folder is located at <HOME>\pxworkspace. For example, when using Windows 7 and the username 'michael', the folder is located at C:\Users\michael\pxworkspace.

  • pxworkspace/config.txt
  • The config.txt file inside this folder stores your login name and password if you choose to remember the login name and password each time you start PXPortfolioXpert . The password is difficult to read, but not impossible to decipher, so care should be taken on shared or public computers. This file can be removed/deleted at any time and will automatically be re-created the next time PXPortfolioXpert is run.

  • pxworkspace/.metadata
  • The pxworkspace/.metadata folder stores your layouts and saved preferences. This folder can be removed/deleted at any time, but doing so will cause any custom settings, saved layouts, fonts, or colors to be lost.

Software Layout

Main Menu Bar

The Main Menu Bar provides access to the various software features, settings, and information as contained under the File, Edit, Theme, Window, and Help menus.

The Banner Area displays the PortfolioXpert image by default, but it can also display the image of your business or practice, allowing you to rebrand the software. Watch the White Label video tutorial to see how this is done.

The Home Page

The Home Page contains links to other VPMVirtual Portfolio Manager Partners products and resources, including this Wiki. Clicking on a link will open it in Internet Explorer.

Views

Views are window displays containing specific information and are named according to the information being displayed, such as Portfolio List and Open Positions. The majority of views are either portfolio views, used to display portfolio information, or symbol views, used to display symbol information. There are also some other views designed for charts, reports, queries, and watch lists. Selecting an item in one view automatically updates other associated views to display their information for the selected item.

Perspectives

A perspective in PortfolioXpert is a layout of multiple views and can be a combination of any number of them. There are six pre-configured perspective layouts, namely: Portfolios, Queries, Reports, Research, Symbols, and Watch Lists. To switch between perspectives, click the icons and note the yellow line over the icon of the active perspective.

Software Features

Reports

A lot of development went into enhancing reports for PortfolioXpert with the goal of nice, professional-looking reports available for financial advisers and their clients. Currently, four reports are auto generated each night, one for each of your watch lists (must have trigger events set) and three for each portfolio. In addition, these reports are also generated for VPMVirtual Portfolio Manager 2.0 portfolios which sync up with and run inside of PortfolioXpert.

  1. Full Report (click here to view)
  2. Full XLS Report (click here to download)
  3. Orders Report (click here to view)
  4. Watch List Triggers Report (click here to view)
  5. Ticker Symbol Changes Report (click here to view)

Themes

PortfolioXpert has two themes to choose from, the default dark and a light. To switch themes:

  1. Click Theme from the Main Menu Bar (screenshot).
  2. Select Dark Theme or Light Theme (screenshot).

White Label

PXPortfolioXpert is a white-label software product that allows you to rebrand it making it look like your own. To change the PortfolioXpert logo:

  1. Right mouse click in the Banner Area and select Change Logo (screenshot).
  2. Locate an image file from your computer (images are automatically scaled to fit so large images with a transparent background will look the best) and then click the Open button (screenshot).

To change the banner area background color:

  1. Right mouse click in the Banner Area and select Change Background (screenshot).
  2. Locate an image file from your computer and then click the Open button (screenshot).

To clear both the custom logo and background color, right mouse click in the Banner Area and select Clear Custom Logo / Background (screenshot).

Light bulb 256.png Company logos will appear within the software and also all of the PDF reports (screenshot), but will not appear in the PDF reports until after the nightly system run. To update the reports immediately, right mouse click a portfolio and select Allocate Portfolio(s). This does not work for Premier subscriptions or VPMVirtual Portfolio Manager 2.0 synced portfolios.

  1. Click File from the Main Menu Bar and select Request Symbols (screenshot).
  2. Enter the ticker symbol for the security to be loaded (screenshot).
  3. Click the Request Symbols button (screenshot).

Light bulb 256.png The ticker symbol used when requesting a symbol load must exactly match with our data vendor for it to be loaded into the database.
